The Holidays - Bust or Boon?

The period of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the most joyful times of the year.  It is also one of the most difficult times of the year for many people.  Generally, people are optimistic, generous, courteous, and happy.  However, for many others it is a time of great emotional stress and loneliness.  For some the emotional trauma is almost unbearable.  The suicide rate increases dramatically during this time of year.

Extended family can play an important role in providing emotional support for a person who is spending their first holiday without their spouse, a parent, or a child.  A cancer victim who realizes that they are probably experiencing this holiday season for the last time, also needs the support of their family.  People in these circumstances don’t need for their family to wear morbid faces.  They need to hear the laughter and joy.  They need to experience the warmth of love.  They need to associate with others who are enjoying the season.  They just need for their family to act normally in their presence.  This will buoy their spirits and put a smile on their faces and will help provide the inner strength that is needed to make it through the holiday period.  Be sure to spend some time with your family during this holiday season.  Build precious memories that will be with you for as long as you live.

This can be a special time of the year for the Lord’s spiritual family as well.  Not because of these man-made holiday periods, but because of the joy and charitable spirit that is common during this time.  There is no biblical authority for observing Thanksgiving or Christmas as divinely sanctioned events, but there is no reason why we can’t take advantage of the joy that prevails and promote good will among our fellow Christians.  Of course, this should be done every day of the year.  However, simply because God did not establish Christmas as a religious holiday doesn’t mean that I have to go around with a frown on my face to express my realization of that fact.  As a Christian, I can take advantage of this time of year and promote love among my brethren.  Without a doubt, it could even become habit forming.  Think how powerful that would be in maintaining the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace!  I wish for each of you a very wonderful holiday season.
